I have OpenSUSE Linux 10.1 OSS. Bet when I start installing my SUSE, I get an error message: "Could not locate SUSE Linux installation CD". So, how to detect my CD-RW/DVD drive and my HDD? By the way, Knoppix doesn't load my CDROM/DVD drive.
I searched over the Internet about this problem. Some say, that I should load the ide-generic module, and everything will be all right. But generic module is loaded, and it's no use.

I have ASUS M2V motherboard, SATA2 SEAGATE ST3250620AS drive (Secondary SATA drive - my BIOS shows), NEC DVD-/+RW ND-4571A LabelFlash (Primary Master, if I'm not wrong).

Maybe someone could help me?

"HCL" is the hardware compatibility list (see links above). Here you find information about Linux supported hardware.

But it's not the drive that you should look for, but the SATA controller of your mainboard. I'd be surprised if it's not supported, but if your system is very new...

It may be a little vague, but you should play with the BIOS settings. Maybe you have to enable/disable functions that currently prevent proper drive recognition.

Well, I found a driver for my Marvel MV61xx chipset. Tomorrow, I'll try to install this driver under Gentoo Linux - Gentoo Linux CD boots in my system.

I had the same problem (SATA CD/DVD drive not detected, had to do a network install but then no /dev/sr0 after boot, OpenSuse 11.4), on a computer I had assembled myself.

But the solution was easy after all: plugging the CD/DVD drive into a different SATA plug of the motherboard, rather than the one next to the HDD drive.

According to other posts I found later on, like http://forums.opensuse.org/english/g...-detected.html, it seems to be about SATA2 vs SATA3.
