Running wine - a bit confused on how to start it/run it

HI everyone,

I know this maybe a silly question (many apologies) but yesterday I wanted to try a game under wine just to see how it worked under Linux (I'm a gamer at heart - former Sims addict- but wouldn't dream of playing a game on this system with all the low memory/processor speed/such) but I'm unsure where/how to run it. I did go to konsole and ran the wine command there and read the manual but had no luck on how to start wine. The wine commands under console said to type ' wine --- program name' to tinker with the program. How do I run wine/game or is wine made solely for other types of dos/windows programs?

Im also confused about whether I need to install Windows. The WINE site says I don't have/need to but the documentation says I need Windows or just parts of Windows to be able to run wine. Ehh it's confuzzling me...

Thanks everyone :)

It depends on the game/app. Some will need dll's that only a windows install can provide.

As far as the command to run wine, you are correct. For example:

wine /media/dvdrecorder/setup.exe ----< to install a windows program from CD/DVD

Try out the new 'cedega' version of transgaming's wineX. There is a timelimited demo available from their website www.transgaming.com/cedegademo (I believe). I tried it for S&G last night, and it seems to work pretty well.

if you do an update with YaST I belive there is a version of winex that is availble for download as well. But yes, transgaming is the way to go as mention earlier...

Thanks mike, you really helped me. The command helped but unfortunately was not able to install the game :( Wasn't compatible. I'll try the other though. I truly appreciate. Mucho thanks Mike :)
