Removing Suse10.1

Hi,

does anyone know how I can remove Suse10.1 ( which I just installed, but need to change the partition structure) from my laptop?

Infact, what I need to do is to re-size the linux partition (reduce size), but I think windows cannot reuse the released space ?? am I right?

so I have to reinstall winXP and then reinstall Suse10.1 ??

Is there a shorter way?

thanks,
RR

If you install SUSE again you will be given the option of adjusting your partitions. I had a similar problem where I allocated to much space for SUSE. So I re-installed and adjusted the partitions. You may find you will have to delete the Linux partitions and start again.

thanks for your reply, but my problem is that even if I do this, will winXP be able to use the emptied space on the harddisk?

I think that re-adjusting partitions will not automatically make the released-space availble to XP? ( I don't want to have another windows partition ..but I want to GROW the exising Xp partition....)

do you get my dillemma?

help!

thanks,
RR.

You can use ntfsresize (http://www.linux-ntfs.org/) to change the size of the Windows partition without reinstalling it. Go to the download section and get ntfsprogs.

edit: Note that you'll need to extend the partition with fdisk (e.g. using knoppix) before resizing it. Actually, I think knoppix has the ntfs tools anyway.

edit2: What am i saying? Of course knoppix has the ntfs tools. I used them a couple of months ago. Duh! It worked flawlessly. First, you really want to backup the Windows partition, just in case, use ntfsclone to do this (assuming you have a spare drive to back up to). Then use fdisk to resize the partition, then ntfsresize to expand the filesystem. You'll need to do a bit of arithmetic with the number of cylinders, the partiton must obviously be big enough for the new size but you don't want to waste too much space. The you can reboot, make sure Windows boots OK, then just reinstall SUSE as normal.
