proxy config question (control center)

Control Center -> Internet & Network -> Proxy

1) Under Authorization in this section 'prompt as needed' radio button is selected and the option below that to specify a username and password to use is unavailable (grayed out, or dimmed). Why? How am I supposed to specify a username and password for the proxy?

2) I know web browsers often use their own proxy config seperate from this so in general then, how can a verify whether a program is using this proxy config or not?

3) does YOU use the proxy settings under Control Center -> Internet & Network -> Proxy?

any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you play around with it a bit, you should find the answers to your questions.

1. Prompt as needed means that a pop-up will ask you for credentials whenever it gets an "authorization request" from the proxy server.

2. When you set this, Yast tells you that this Control Panel does not set the proxy in the browsers. And it tells you it only does it for YOU. Best way is to run your own tests like I did.

3. Yes, it tells you that when you configure it.

1) I kind of figured that. But I wanted to know 'why' the option to specify a username/password is there but unavailable to choose.

2) my question was kind of vague (spelling?) I understand that this setting in the control center is a general setting and 'some' programs may use it while others use there own settings. I was wondering if there was some general way or some general tool to find out whether or not a certian program ( any program ) uses those settings or not.

3) whoops. my bad. I just read the message again. I had read it before and obviously forgot. I'm trying to start using linux 'between things'. Very difficult doing it this way. A little bit here and there is not getting the job done!

I will need the help of wise linux folk in my journey. Thats why I'm here, "Where Linux Newbies Come For Help" as the shortcut says on my favorites list.

thanks for the reply. The more important question for me here is number 1. The other 2 I just threw in since they were related... But I really would like to know why that option is disabled.

thanks again. I appreciate the reply.

I'm sorry. My mistake.

YOU is setup under YaST2 -> Network Services -> Proxy

If you put the proxy username and password in here, it will work.

Under Control Center -> Internet & Network -> Proxy
I couldn't get the option to "Use the following login information"
That option doesn't seem to be available to me - even as root.
