problem with amarok

whenever i play mp3's in amarok, or any files for that matter... the sound comes out fine, but the timer (donno how its properly called... the clock which shows how long ur song is already playing), and the progress bar (which shows position in the song) dont move, they both stay at 0:00... and when the song finishes playing, amarok doesnt progress through the playlist--im assuming cuz it doesnt know that the song is finished...
i tried both helium and xine, installed art and win32codec, but nothing... problem persists

any help appreciated...
btw im using Suse eval 10 x64, amarok 1.3.1, and kde 3.4.2 "level b"

anyone encountered this before?

I have a 32-bit platform so comparisons may not be valid. You can get a newer 64-bit version of amarok from Guru, that is not as crippled as the Novell/SuSE version:
http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/rpm-...=Sound/amarok/
Pay close attention to the needed dependencies.

You may also wish to consider updating your xmms and xine from Packman:
xmms: http://packman.links2linux.org/index...ction=675&vn=2

xine packages:
http://packman.links2linux.org/index...ction=124&vn=3
http://packman.links2linux.org/index...ction=125&vn=3
[note the above URLs are different]

Also perhaps update your kaffeine:
http://packman.links2linux.org/index...ction=325&vn=3

The versions that come with Novell/SuSE are in some respects crippled.

Sounds like you have some general installation problems. Try upgrading all the multimedia packages and go from there, maybe it isn't system wide. You can do that in YAST from the guru or packman repos. After that, we can see what else may be going on.
