hi
i encounter a problem when i wanted to install suse linux 10.
at the installation when it wants to evaluate software packages this report is shown below the software :
no source found at 'cd:///;devices=/dev/hdb,/dev/hdc'.
ERROR :no proposal
when i click on thesoftware i can see the packages and their details .
by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F5 it gives me the shell and i can mount /dev/hdb (into /media/cdrom directory ) and cd to it and i see the files there .
when i click on accept it shows an error and says :
the proposal contains an error that must be resolved before continuing.
so what is the problem and what should i do to install from this cd
After mounting the cd, try changing the source to 'device=/dev/hdb'. I don't think I've seen multiple devices there before, but that doesn't mean that it's wrong. If you definitely have the disk in /dev/hdb, just point directly to that one, and see if it finds it.
well i bought another suse linux CD (just CD1 )and i installed the packages from the first CD and i went to the yast control center and i did a media check on the cds and this is the result for my previous CD:
identification :UltraISO V6.5 ISO9660/joliet/EI Torito FileSystem Builder (c)2002-2003 EZB Syste
Medium :CD1
size:616874 kb
result :md5sum not checked
the result for other 4 CDs is " OK " and the identification is : SuSE-Linux-CD-OSS-i386-10.0
i did a media check on my new CD1 :
identification :SUSE-Linux-EVAL-i386-10.0
medium :CD1
size :685826 kb
result k
but now that i reboot the system and i want to install the other packages from the other 4 CDs it does'nt accept the CDs and this is the error report when it request the 2nd CD(i have already put the 2nd CD):
the source at the specified url now provides a different media ID.if the url is correct this indicates that the source content has changed.to continue using this source start Change Source of Installation from the YAST control center and refresh the installation source.
do i have to throw this all CDs into the Trash and buy new suse linux CDs?
i cant update it by installing individual packags (i dont know what to install to have gnome or whatever..)and i am disgust of rpm and its dependencies.
what should i do ?
This problem usually occurs when you have unreadable media. Often cleaning the CD will resolve the issue. You should also clean the laser in your drive.
If you can get to the part where the packages are installing and you have a read error, some packages may be skipped and reinstalled later using YAST. The packages that you CAN bypass are things like Open Office, Games, or anything that is not needed by the system during its initial boot. Keep a list of the bypassed packages so you will be sure that they are installed later.
I usually have this problem when installing from the DVD, I usally just re-burn the ISO.
It sounds like the pressed media must be of the same set. Make sure that you use the same CDs that came with each other.
BTW- If you have a computer with a relatively fast internet connection, you may download the Suse 10 Eval edition for free. The Eval is basically the same as the retail version, it just does not include the less common packages. You can get these missing packages in the repositories though.

Or even better, once you boot into suse, launch yast2 and navigate to "Installation Source" and specify the opensuse ftp as the installtion source ! This way, you wouldn't need CDs to continue installing packages as the packages are downloaded straight off the ftp site.
Ofcourse, for the above to work, you should have a minimal working suse installation that you can boot into and be able to launch and connect to internet.
Another way of installing (the way I install linux) is, to extract the contents of all CDs to the hard disk and boot with the first (installation) CD and tell it to use the source from the partition/directory where you just extracted the files.
