Problem Accessing Home Directory

We have two machines both running SUSE 10.0 exclusively, no other OS installed. We've used SUSE since Feb this year and do not miss Windows at all. We use KDE. I carried out a default install and have not been 'tinkering' with any system settings.
Everything is fine apart from a stange and intermittent problem which crops up on both machines (they have different hardware specs).
For no apparent reason every now and then we are unable to access our Home directory. Click on the icon, Konqueror opens but there's nothing in the window. The blue cog is rotating and there's a message in the bottom left saying, "Stalled". I can click on and access any other directory while this is happening but Home is inaccessable. Sometimes we get this problem part way through a session, sometimes it's there immediately following a fresh boot. Our Home directories are on the same partition as the OS.
The only sure way I have found to clear the problem is to re-start the computer. When I do this the re-boot is much slower than normal.
I've tried searching the forum and on the Novell/SUSE and KDE websites without success.

What version of KDE is it - it should tell with the KDE Control Center? It may be a bug specific to that version of Konqueror - have you done any online updates through YaST, or tried moving one of the machines up to KDE 3.5 and see if the problem persists?

Open Konsole and enter the top command. I suspect that you have a chron job running to rebuild the locate data base or the whereis data base, and that you're stalled because the drive is busy.

A thought: If my conjecture is correct, the HD access light should be on when you're having the problem. In any case, top should give you some clue about the problem's cause.
