Plugins in firefox

When I download a pdf file it puts it into /temp/ but firefox gives an error window that it can't handle the mime type.
Going into the preferences ,the window to list the mime types comes up with none listed and so I can't choose a pdf viewer as a helper application and there is no plugin that I have seen.

I tried about:confi and changed the default plugin setting so it is now switched on but to no avail. Still wont load a pdf viewer . Can anybody help?

Here's a link to my method of setting up Xpdf and Firefox in Slackware. It might work for you also.
