Please help with setting up Yast repositories in SuSE 10.0.

I just moved from Mandriva 2005 LE to SuSE 10.0. So far, I've been very impressed with the ease of configuration of SuSE. But I'm not sure where good repositories are. I'm used to the easy urpmi website and the urpmi tool in Mandriva. Yast seems just as good, but I don't know where to point it to for repositories. Could someone reply back with some good repositories? I realize that there is a sticky about this topic, but I'm starting a new topic because I also specifically need a repository with the lesstif package. If someone knows of an easy way to get that on SuSE without worrying about dependencies (i.e. a repository that has it so that yast can worry about that) it would be great. Thanks again!

Package management for Suse is done via apt. Apt4rpm to be exact.

ftp://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt

Install everything in suse-rbos for you distro.

edit the /etc/apt/souces.list file to look something like this:

http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ap...urces.list.FTP

Do an apt-get update or run synaptic to update your packages. Install via command with apt-get install blah or use synaptic to point and click your way through it.

The generic page with details is here:

http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/

I successfully installed apt and synaptic, but I couldn't get the additional repositories to work correctly (for example, http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/a...ources.list.FTP). Synaptic complained that it couldn't read the new lines or that they were malformed. So maybe I don't know the syntax or maybe the repositories weren't working. Either way, I can't find lesstif with the repositories already included in the base apt/synaptic install. Could you provide some additional help? thanks.

I've been using ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/suse/i386/ with success with Yast and the SUSE online update with SUSE 9.3

I think I bumbled onto the list of mirrors on the SUSE website.

LaptopLinux, copy and paste the text to an emacs file. Or rewrite it if need be. It is malformed because there are hidden characters that you are pasting from the http.

Jerre, it's not the same thing. You are missing out on a whole 'nother world of cool stuff.

Look at the 2 stickies at the top of this (SuSE/Novell) forum for repository ideas.

Thanks for the help everyone. I got the repositories from Thoreau to work, and I think I found the right libraries in those sources too!

YaST is pretty good, especially if updated to point to 3rd party repositories.

One can also install APT for SuSE (it comes with SuSE-10.0), and with updated repository list, apt is also pretty good.

My current "favourite" is Smart software Package manager, which is available as a 3rd party rpm from Guru: http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/rpm-...=System/smart/
You can find more information by doing searches on this forum. You can also search the internet, and look for comparisons/assessments.
