Playing Mp3 ands VCDs on SUSE?

I think the patent restrictions prevent Novell from bundling the MP3 and VCD codecs into the distro, but it's annoying not being able to play any VCDs. I tried using Xine and Kaffeine, but neither recognize the VCD properly. Also I'm able to play MP3 with Amarok but not with XMMS.

Is there any site where I can download the codecs for MP3 and MPEG (VCD) so that I can play VCDs from SUSE?

Install mplayer.

note: you should be able to get the codecs via yast shouldn't you??
Anyhoo...

www.mjmwired.net has the best source-install of mplayer I've seen. It's for Fedora so you'll have to translate some of the instructions for SuSE. It's not that hard - source is source is source. Any rpm packages will just be the SuSE equivalents.

Happy hunting.

I am not sure of how to add online repositories into Yast. Is there a list of repos which I can add to the Yast sources?

There is a sticky in the Suse forum with the details of how to setup repos. There is also a list of repos on the opensuse website. I suggest you configure packman and guru repos.

For usable multimedia you definetly want packman and guru. Well mostly packman really. I have no problem playing home made vcd's. I wonder if commercial vcd's present a bigger challenge.

Ok, thanks for the pointers. Can I use OpenSUSE repos with SUSE 10 (the downloaded "trial" version)?

Yes. Any of the versions of SUSE 10.0 will work with them.

Yes, thanks. I like the new repositories. I found them from this site
http://susewiki.apanela.com/goodlinks:yast_sources

I installed the regular Xine version, not the crippled SUSE one and now it works with VCDs.
