PIXMA 870 scanning drivers

Hi there,
First post here.
I cannot get SuSE 11.3_64 to recognize my new Canon PIXMA 870 multifunction printer as a scanner. I am using USB connection and the printer function works after installing the Canon file:cnijfilter-mx870series-3.30-1-i386.rpm.tar.gz.
Canon has suggested installing the scanner driver: scangearmp-mx870series-1.50-1-i386-rpm.tar.gz. Which I have also done.
When I start a scanner program (Xsane, or another)it returns a message that no suitable devices exist. I am suspecting perhaps something in the udev.rules.d files as I see a flicker of recognition in the USB detector when I power-up the device which disappears before I can read it. It prints but won't scan. Could this also be a problem with the 64 bit system that I am running?
thanks in advance. jim
