pcmcia wifi card - installed: yes, active: no!

my orinoco card worked fine. then i tried to install a new driver. looked like it worked, but now my card won't ever turn on. went back to original driver and same thing, won't turn on. in hardware info it says installed: yes, active: no. can't figure out how to 'activate.' tried crdctrl insert, no joy. when i plug the card in, the hard drive does a few things, like it's going to activate, then it stops. suseplugger never says anything and does not show the card. will provide whatever other info is needed, not sure what that might be. any ideas?
