Overclocking Nvidia Cards
 

Hello, i was looking thru Yast..and found an app called NVCLOCK. It states the following:

""NVClock is a small utility that allows users to overclock NVIDIA based video cards running on the Linux platform. The original code used in building this application was borrowed from the nvcs application. That code has been extensively reworked in order to make the utility much more user friendly and to make it play nice with current distros and drivers.""

I have a Nvidia 128mb video card in a Sony Vaio VGN FS 660/W laptop purchased in Okinawa Japan.
If i overclock my video card..can there be trouble :| has anyone done this with success?:Pengy:

o/c it.worst case says it'll fry due to excess heat and over-volting if you can adjust the bios settings.
myself,laptops run hot enough so i wouldn't even attempt it.

There can be trouble and as has been said, laptops generally run a bit warm without any help. Why do you want to overclock it? If you don't have a specific need then don't, if you do then try pushing it up in small increments, you can also use nvclock to monitor the temperature of the card. Keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't get too hot.

At the moment I'm running a 6200 (temporary so I'm not concerned) which has very minimal cooling and it's idling at 61C which is acceptable but only just IMO. You wouldn't want your card idling much higher than that because if you put some load on it then you're going to see 90C+ temps which will kill the card pretty quick.

I have a PNY card with an nVidia Geforce 6200 and 256MB ram, and have nvclock v 0.8 (Beta2) installed. The card has a big vcool fan (pumping air from a duct hogging two expansion slots, right on to the GPU heat sink). I added this to the modprobe.conf.local file:
this is required for the card to have fast writes enabled.
I don't see much hope of overclocking this card very high. I had the memory up to 600MHz from stock 531, and the GPU up to 420 from stock 351, and saw a bit of artifacting using Doom3 to test (the AGP voltage was boosted to 1.8v). The nvclock program claims inability to unlock pixel pipelines on my card.
I could sure use any advice, other than trying to actually volt mod the card hardware, which I don't want to try.
