output sound on SUSE 9.3

is this only suse problem or all distro because I had same problem with ubuntu?
The problem is when I try to play DVD while playing MP3 with XMMS or AMAROK why only one can produce output sound? usually the first program e.g when I first play mp3 with xmms then when I play DVD with kaffein only xmms can produce sound while the movie (DVD) is silent......
or is this why on linux there are a lot of output sound choice (OSS, ESD, ALSA, etc) ?

can anyone help me with this?

You may use esound (ESD) to get sound from multiple sources.

I am not sure if you can call esound an alternative to ALSA/OSS. As far as I understand, ESD sits in between the sound device and the audio sources. It mixes the streams to a single one and passes this to the audio device.
