does Novell support openSUSE as it does for it's server packages, or is openSUSE's support the same as every other distribution of linux?

What do you exactly mean ?
There two versions of suse opensuse and Suse Linux Enterprise
Opensuse is free of charge and is supported until they moved on with the versions .
As a example opensuse 10. 10.1 and maybe opensuse 10.2 is no longer supported because we are now opensuse 11.1
For Suse Linux Enterprise you have to pay for the validation key and so also for the support by Novell

OpenSUSE is the free version, so support will be limited at best. What does the OpenSUSE website tell you?

In general, just about any dollar-free version of Linux will have the same "official" support from the author. The size and quality of the community varies widely.

I don't know---what do the websites say?

Fedora--for example--is reported to be the testing ground for things that eventually go into RHEL. Conversely, RHEL tends to NOT have the latest stuff.
