openSUSE linux-kernel-sources

Edit: Whoops, the title is wrong, it should say linux-kernel-headers

I checked the openSUSE repos today and found that there's updates for kernel-source and kernel-default (2.6.18.2-34 > 2.6.18.8-79.1) but I didn't see one for linux-kernel-headers (2.6.18.2-3).

Does anyone know if you can update the kernel and the kernel-source without updating linux-kernel-headers? I checked with the YaST on line update and no kernel updates were listed.

Also, can someone remind me what the rpm command is to find out if a particular rpm will install without actually installing it?

TIA

It's been my experience that you really shouldn't upgrade your kernel headers every time you upgrade your kernel. Whatever kernel headers the glibc was compiled against is what you should stick with. For instance with Slackware I'm using a 2.6.18 kernel to boot but the kernel headers I'm using are still the 2.4.33.3 kernel headers as that is what the rest of the distro, especially glibc, was compiled against. Here is the warning that Pat has put out about kernel headers. So I never upgrade the headers once I install the distro.

FWIW,
MMYoung

BTW is rpm --test nameofrpm.rpm what you're thinking of?

Open a terminal and type in rpm --help or man rpm for more info.
