openSUSE 10.1 Won't Update!

Hello all;

I have been trying to update my SUSE box and keep on getting this error;

ERROR: Dependency resolution failed:
Establishing script:libzypp-patch-zmdrestart.sh-2-1533-1.noarch[SUSE-Linux-10.1-Updates] This would invalidate script:libzypp-patch-zmdrestart.sh-2-1533-1.noarch[SUSE-Linux-10.1-Updates].
Marking this resolution attempt as invalid.

My Box is already configured to Allow Remote Administration and Open Port in Firewall in YaST. Does anyone have a solution to this error? Please let me know.

Hmmm... the default update manager in SuSe 10.1 has given lots of people (inlcuding me) all kinds of headaches. I eventually gave up and followed the advice suggested in many other forums of using the Smart Package Manager instead. Maybe give that a try and see if it can resolve the dependencies properly?

I've installed SMART, but it has consistant problems attempting to run. I forget what the line is, but it says something about how it has read-only mode, and it can't do anything.

Any ideas?

I had the same thing when trying to use the zen updater for the first time. To get round it, go into YAST/Online update, and accept whatever is already selected there. Keep repeating until no more updates are processed - this may take three or four runs (do a reboot when the kernel updates, and you may need to reinstall your GPU if it is NVidia.)

Once you've done that, the zen updater should work ok.

Thanks a million y'all for all the help.
Your remedy worked like magic MassDosage, i'm migthy glad i have the Smart Package Manager now as i can convenienty upgrade my box anytime right from the shell. The ZMD zenupdater with the rug CLI seems to be a good idea if the dependency problems can all be resolved.

Your fix did'nt quite work out on my box, Sp1t. as i still had errors and dependency issues at the end of YaST update. But thanks all the same for your help, i'm sure it'll work for someone else.

Imagine a world without LQ!

Hi
Open SuSE 10.1 is one of the best SuSE distros I have used (as an end user) when compared to 9.3 and 10.0. However, initial updates and setting up of the system can be a pain in the arse. After struggling with it for a couple of months I have come up with a foolproof mechanism of updating Open SuSE 10.1.

1. Install the system the usual way without fiddling around with the package selection. You can fiddle with it later once the system is set.

2. You may also install what's in addon disc 1.

3. Open Yast -> Software management

4. Delete the following packages and everything that yast finds associated with it - zmd, zen software updater, rug, libzypp. With this suseregister will also get deleted, no problem.

5. Click accept, and yast will delete these packages. Now after this open installation sources in yast. Here add one YUM server which is geographically closest to you. (Can't post url)

6. It takes 15-20 minutes to add the catalogue on my DSL 256/256, so be prepared to wait for longer on a slower connection.

7. When you see the YUM server added to your list of installation sources click finish. DO NOT ADD ANY MORE INSTALL SOURCES FOR THE TIME BEING. When you click finish the clock (hour glass equivalent) starts near the mouse cursor, BUT the window does not close. Don't panic. I have noticed the data light on my router blinking furiously after I click finish. My guess is that it is downloading the catalogue again! So be ready to wait for another 15 minutes or more!

8. Once the window closes your problems are 50% solved. Now click Online Update in yast. After it refreshes the list of updates just click accept. Don't bother to go through the list of updates as from what I have experienced, the first online update only installs the proper libzypp and yast modules. After these are installed click finish and the Yast Online Update window closes.

9. Now again click Online Update in Yast. Now the REAL update takes place and your system gets all the required security updates.

10. After you instal these updates, add the addtional yast repositories to the installation sources. You will find them here
(Can't post url)

11. Don't add the KDE repository unless you want to update KDE and you know how to do it.

12. After this again run software management to install what is required form the additional yast repositories.

13. Only after installing ALL required software you may reinstall zen updater from Yast -> Software Management. It will help you with patch alerts like SuSE Watcher in SuSE 10.0

Enjoy your Open SuSE 10.1 distro

Thumbs down update suse 10.1

when i see your are enjoy with suse 10.1 i laf. I start with suse 6 or 7 a long time ago and i choice suse for a lot of reasons but one was yast and automatique update.

i just start to update on my pc's from 10.0 to 10.1 and follow has everybody on update problem as i saw in many forums.
I think Novell put 10.1 to early without the complete tests.

I have try to remove zen-uodater, zmd etc.. but after that i will be impossible to do anything with yast, for exemple if i start update, the windows close and yast stop.

so i try this.

download from ftp.suse.com the following packages most recent pkg
zmd
zen-updater
yast2-qt2
yast2-pkg-bindigs
yast2-packager
yast2-ncurses
yast2

run SuSEconfig
after that i start update from yast
the first update was for libzypp
then yast reload and continue without problem the all (240 pkg !!) update

please novell dont continu to make so wrong things and put a special script to help the first update. how many people will be sad with a so bad yast !!i never choice Suse in 2006 if i start with 10.1
regards
