OpenSUSE 10.1 / HP / 3D & XGL
I'm probably gonna get knocked hard for this one, but I'm ready to scream. I've been working with Suse 10 mostly on a HP notebook. I've been struggling with the whole 3D/Compiz/XGL eye candy for some time but I can't seem to get it right, no matter how many forums I read. (I always seem to get something different to do.) Currently, I have OpenSuSe 10.1 installed (compiz, xgl & xgl h/w list std installed). I have not had the guts to do any updates as previously the process failed. This is what I've done up to now: Standard (full) install of OS (with compiz, XGL, XGL h/w list). Upon reboot, I installed the ATi drivers (--buildpkg, init 3, rpm -Uvh, Sax2...etc), crossed fingers and rebooted. PC takes some time to start up, but seems o.k. Then 'compiz --replace gconf...etc' and 'gnome-window-decorator' and all the eye candy is there. Add these command to startup, reboot again, and it works!! But, run glxgears and I get a reading of (sometimes) +-2700 to 800 on occassion. Run a game like Neverball, get a warning no 3d accel. no direct rendering. Can anybody suggest something for me or tell me what I'm doing wrong??? Also, I can't get the themer to work - the app runs but I can't change any themes. Suggestions?
