Open Suse 11: alsa settings get lost after session ends

Suse 11.0 with KDE. To adjust the outputlevel I use alsamixer.
When done I save the new settings using alsactl store.
But when I interrupt the session and restart it later, my settings are gone and I must do it all again.
Annoying, isn't it?
Is it possible to save the settings in a way that a new session does not overwrite them again?

Sorry for you but that won't work.
Sound Mixer is a front-end for alsamixer and it suffers the same failure.
