Online Update via Internet and not CD/DVD

I'm having a problem with updating Suse 9.2 software packages. I have Yast and have been using that to update. The problem is that with the update, sometimes it'll go to the FTP server and get the latest updates, other times it'll just go to the DVD or CD. I'm trying to update Gaim and when I run online update Yast never picks up the newest version. I know that Gaim is already on version 1-"something" but the latest one that Yast picks up is v 0.8.2. I think the problem could be that Yast is trying to take packages from the disc rather than the internet.

I've already tried to add FTP and HTTP locations for Suse to go download from but these places show out of date software as well. I don't know what to do. I'm sure that someone has already managed to configure Yast to search the internet for the latest software and keep everything up to date. It doesn't make sense to me that programs will continuing running old software as opposed to the new stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

YaST doesn't go out and search the internet for updates. It only uses the sites that are programmed into it, along with any more that you add.

I can however, direct you to this site that has version 1.1.1 for SUSE 9.2

First install any packages that you want (pick an old version if you have to). Then use YOU (YaST Online Update) to update to the latest version online. YOU will not ask for the CD/DVD, but it will not install software either. It will only update software that you already have installed.

You can get at "Online Update" from YaST or from the icon in the lower right corner (I'm using 9.1; I assume all of this is unchanged in 9.2)

So for this website, is it possible for me to add this into Yast so that it can go there and automatically download and update Gaim for me? Or do I need to get the file on my own and update it?

I have already done this numerous times. I've gone and selected YOU and hope to get the latest packages and software updates but I keep gettting the same old software. I guess the problem might be finding a mirror that has packages that are most current. I'm not too sure if that is the problem though. From what you guys are telling me so far, its possible that all I need is a mirror that has the latest software updates for Suse 9.2.

Either one. However the list of all rpms at guru is here (I think).

Yes. Like the SUSE supplementary mirrors have updates for KDE.

YOU will update any peice of software that you have installed to the absolute latest that is available from SuSE. In case you missed it, reread the end of my last sentece. If it is available from Novel SuSE, then it can be updated using YOU.

This does NOT mean that SuSE will have the latest packages for anything. Big distro's will often hold off on new packages until they are "stable". You can still get the latest software from other parties. Just be aware that if you do, you no longer have a pure SuSE system. You may find some things don't work quite right; you may need to edit some config files; etc.

I'm not saying you shouldn't get the packages that you really want. There are a few packages that I use that SuSE doesn't ship with. I'm just saying that there is a limit to what SuSE can be expected to update. There are a lot of packages that get updated regularly. If I was SuSE, I wouldn't want to be responsible for all of them either.
