nvidia build fails under SuSE 9.1

For the life of me I cannot get the nvidia driver installed under SuSE 9.1 after recompiling the kernel.

With other distributions I've typically used the nvidia installer. No problems. With SuSE, I get a "failed to build" error (or something to that effect). Using Yast2 and online update doesn't work either. In fact, with SuSE 9.2 online update doesn't work at all. I haven't been able to get an ORIGINAL nvidia driver installed under 9.2 at all. It appears to download OK but then fails during the install. Yet Yast2 thinks it IS installed!?!

I've had so many issues with 9.2 I've given up installing it. First I couldn't install from DVD (apparently a bad copy), then I couldn't install the nvidia driver using online update. Subsequent attempts to install 9.2 from the CDs have since failed. No error, the installation just seems to hang.

Anyway, that's all a side story. I really just want to be able to recompile kernels and reinstall the nvidia driver. This used to be trivial to do, but it seems the more things "improve" in the Linux world the more things get broken in the process! (see Xandros for another example of this).
