Question Noob question regarding rpm packages for Suse 64bit

Hi there,

I've got my SUSE 9.2 running now. I went for the 64bit installation and now i tried to install an arcade game named powermanga (nice one by the way). I found a complete rpm package specificly made for Suse9.2.

I tried to install it with YAST but nothing happened. Do I need special 64 packages? There is a source package available too. Can I use that one? I've tried that, but in the f.a.q it said "use rpm --rebuild..." and I get the error that "--rebuild" is an unknown option.

So is this just not made for 64bit or do I make any mistakes?

Thanks for the help,
Zzorrkk

"Do I need special 64 packages? There is a source package available too. Can I use that one?"

You should use a package compiled for 64 bit. If the powermanga rpm was compiled for 32 bit then you should compile powermanga yourself telling the compiler that you want 64 bit output.

"in the f.a.q it said "use rpm --rebuild..." and I get the error that "--rebuild" is an unknown option."

--rebuild is a rpm option but it has no meaning when you are trying to install a rpm.

Aha - Thanks for the answer.

Concerning the rpm --rebuild question I have to ask again. The german FAQ said

4. Was mache ich wenn die Pakete nicht für meine Version der Distribution vorhanden sind?

Da von allen Paketen auch Source-RPMs verfügbar sind, kannst du dir das Paket auf deinem System neu zusammenbauen.
# rpm --rebuild paketname.src.rpm

translates roughly as:
As there are source-rpms available for every package, you can rebuild it on your system.
# rpm --rebuild paketname.src.rpm

I tried exactly this, but it did not work like I posted above. Do I need other sources?

Thanks,
Zzorrkk

When I answered your question about --rebuild I was thinking of binary rpms. I didn't think of source rpms. I also do not know the answer about source rpms because I always use tarballs.

Talking

Hi,

thanks anyway - I tried my luck, downloaded the sourcefiles and with the help of the readme file managed to compile it. Tough one, took a while, but I learned a bit...

Yeah!
