no sound; configuring hda-intel sound card in suse 10.1 crashes X

I just upgraded from Suse 10.0 to 10.1.
My sound card is an Intel HDA 82801G ICH7 onboard.
I've never been able to get any sound with Suse 9.3, 10.0 or 10.1. Sound works fine in Windows XP.

I upgraded to 10.1 hoping that the new ALSA will work. When I was using ALSA 1.0.9b I could configure the sound card and it would say that everything is ok, but no sound.
Now, when I try to configure it using YaST and also when using alsaconf, X crashes and I have to restart it.

YaST gives the following error message when trying to configure the card and after crashing X:
"The kernel module snd-hda-intel for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters."
