No /dev/dsp at boot

As i understand it, the device /dev/dsp is used for ALSA's OSS emulation. However, i find that this device doesn't exist at boot. The only way to get it to appear is to restart the sound system ($rcalsasound restart).

While it appears after this and everything works it's a little awkward as some programs have to be restarted and sound settings reconfigured all over again.

Is there something that can be done to create it at boot?

A kernel module is possibly not being loaded when the system boots, but I would have to guess as to which one.
