Newbie - Is SuSE 64bit?

Hi,

I've got an athlon 64 and i have just installed SuSE 10.0 as a dual boot. When i was installing i remember that it said something like 'warning: you are installing a 32 bit operating system on a 64 bit computer'. I ignored this warning.

What i want to know is: Is the version of SuSE that i've got running at 64bit? (i assume not). Can i update my version of SuSE to run at 64 bit? Is there a different version that i need to install instead?

The reason that i am asking all this is that i want to run some 64 bit video editing software. I am assuming that i need a 64 bit OS to do this. Is this correct? Can i run 64 bit software on a 32 bit OS?

Thanks

Hi

Like Solaris and other OS, there's a seperate distribution for 64 Bit. So in a nutshell you need the x86-64 version.

You can download the DVD image from www.opensuse.org Just select the correct version.

For video editing, you need the 64Bit binaries. Otherwise it doesn't use the full 64 Bits

Thanks Dirk,

I know next to nothing about linux. What do you mean by the 64bit binaries? I am guessing that this is kind of the 'source code'? Do i need the binaries for the video editing software or SuSE 10.0.

For someone who is confused, this page may show things a little better.

http://www.novell.com/products/susel...rors_isos.html

You are looking to download the ISO image "Eval version on 1 DVD (32bit or 64bit)." Download it, burn it to DVD, and install it.

You can also buy the retail box. It has everything on a dual-layer DVD.

Let me add that I think your computer will run fine on a 32-bit OS. (You are not hurting anything by doing so.) Some people are purposely running 32-bit with 64-bit CPUs.
