New Suse 11.0 Install - 32-bit or 64-bit?
 

I am trying to decide if I should go with the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Suse 11.0 when it comes out. Here's a rundown of my current setup:

- AMD Semprom 2800+ 64-bit
- 3ware RAID-5 Configuration
- 2 GB of RAM
- Used for:

- Webserver
- Fileserver
- Network Backup Location
- BitTorrents

At the moment, it is running a HEAVILY fixed version of Suse 10.0 x86_64. The install is on it's last leg, and I have decided to re-image the server when 11.0 comes out. I have heard several times over that 32-bit versions run better on these early 64-bit processors.

So, my question is, what should I go with, 32-bit or 64-bit? What are your thoughts? Is this just an old rumour of 32-bit versus 64-bit?

64 bit support is much better in 10.3 then 10.0 but truth be told there's never been shown massive performance advatages to 64bit (though certain things like video and heavy computational are faster).

Having said that since most rpms are compiled for i386 chips you'll get more optimized executables running 64bit.

never heard the old 64bit processor rumour

Running 11.0 64 bit on a laptop as a test --everything "appears" to work more or less -- I installed the Beta 2 version.

On a Desktop which I'm using as a Server (using VMWARE and a Virtual W2K3 (32 bit) server for remote access) I'm still using the 32 bit version of SUSE 10.3

I'll certainly install the 64 Bit version on a laptop when 11.0 appears but on the desktop I'll probably wait a while and let others get the bugs out of the system.

From what I've seen of 11.0 64 bit so far it's definitely THE BEST SUSE yet --thank goodness the lessons of the horrors of 10.1 (and to a lesser extent 10.2) have been learned wisely.

For a PRODUCTIVE machine on which you can do useful work 11.0 64 bit is definitely now ready to take on Windows --especially the horrors of VISTA.

Incidentally if you run 64 bit Vista (even as a Virtual Machine) you won't be able to access any 32 bit drivers so if as like most people you might be sharing printers etc you are in serious trouble. No probs with Linux of course.

For total leading edge stuff you can use Knoppix /debian etc but finally for a REAL working productive system 11.0 64 bit seems to be fine.

opensuse 11.0 beta3 , does it have graphic driver for Ati Radeon HD 3450?

radeonhd is the X.org X11 driver for AMD GPG (ATI) r5xx/r6xx chipsets. Main development is driven by Novell, in close relationship to AMD which provides free documentation for the chipsets.

ok, i will try to install it. I just want to make sure i do not have problem with my graphic card.

i will try the live CD first, if it is ok, i will download the 64-bit DVD to install all packages.!

I had tried the live CD KDE, it has my ATI Radeon driver exactly the same as my model HD3450, everything is working fine, I will download the DVD 64 bit and install it permanently.

I remember i had some problems with 10.2 64 bit, could not make any updates. Hope in 11 wont be any problems. Its a waste of hardware to have 64 bit and use 32 bit OS. Would be nice if users with suse 11.0 64 bit would write their experience. 1 day left... I ll install on my pc on week end, if i have time. cant wait and hope for the best)))
