network printing, from suse9.3 to windows xp home

hey
i'm using suse 9.3 on my laptop. i am able to view all computer on my MSHOME workgroup.

when using the kde printer manager:
i click on add new printer/class
i choose smb
i choose anonymous
i click scan. all computer under MSHOME are there.
i choose petros, which is my dads computer name
but i get this error message("Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED")

why am i getting an error. there are no usernames nor passwords on any computer on my home network. i have done this on purpose because i hate running into errors like this one, but i seem to be running into this error anyways.

i chose gues instead of anonymous, once, and it would acctualy find the printer, and i contind the entire setup, but it still didn't work. i kept getting another error. if i choose guest again, though, it won't work anymore. i don' tknow why.

i have been searching for the past several hours trying different things that i have searched this forum and the internet for, but i haven't found a working solution. is there anyone willing to walk through this with me? thanks

I know you don't want to do it but browsing and connecting to shared drives and printers tends to be easier using names and passwords. I had problems using the KDE print manager in SuSE 9.2 so I tend to use the CUPS web manager - localhost:631. I also had issues when trying to attach to remote windows printers - the most reliable connection was to use (in the CUPS set up process)
Code:
smb://username:password@windowsmachine/printshare

i've tried setting this up using the web gui for cups, but it keeps asking me for a username and password. i tried a ton of different things that i could possibly think off, but it's nothing. i tried root, and i tried my user account name, and each with any password i would normally use, and i couldn't get in. do i need to reinstall it?

now, if i put a username and password on my dad's printer, and then go to my comptuer and use yast or kde's printer setup to try to install it, using the username and password, do u think this will work too?

thnx

For CUPS web admin to work you need to run
Code:
lppasswd -a <username>
in a shell as root. Once you've done that you can use that username and the password you used when prompted.

Once you've put a username and paddword on the windows box you should be able to connect ok - I must admit I didn't think of using YaST - if that's got all the right bits in it that's the tool I'd normally recommend as it's SuSE's own. However, depending on what your printer is it may be difficult to choose the best driver - in CUPS there's usually one labelled foomatic recommended.

um...yeah...on the windows box...when u say put a username and password, do you mean for the main user? or on the printer?
