This is my first time really seriously dealing with linux. I have 9.2 pro installed and working how I need it (settled for hard wired since wireless doesn't work) but now I have a printing question. My printer is a shared printer hooked up to another computer on my network via parallel port. In windows I specify it's path by doing \\COMPUTER\printername and it's all good. How do I even start trying to do this with Linux? If needed, its an HP deskjet 722c, not sure if that helps anyone. Thanks!

Use YaST. Go to Hardware -> Printer -> Other -> Print via SMB

Hopefully you can fill in the rest from there.

If i do it that way, I can fill in workgroup fine, its MSHOME, hostname is MAINHOME (the windows path is \\MAINHOME\HP DeskJet 722C so check me), name of remote queue I just put anything like pspool. However, I do not know what to put for username and password, as I have never had to do that in the past. What is this about?

Unless the printer is guest shareable (you'd have to unlock the guest account and force it.. certainly not the default anymore on XP), you'll need to provide LANMAN style credentials to the share.

What is this LANMAN thing you speak of? As far as what account the printer is shared on, its just my dads account, its his copmuter.

In WinXP all shares are protected by default (Windows experts can verify this for me). Either the user needs a credential on the domain (could be an Active Directory domain) or the user must supply a username and password (much like how a Win98 client would participate in a domain). So.. if you are not running a domain, you probably either need to set up an account/password or open up the guest account and share it out with guest privs. Shoot, even if you are on a domain, you'll probably use username/password from a Linux box (i.e. lanman style) to access the share (be it a printer share or file share).

Your dad must share it,
If you have a firewall set up open ports 138 and 631 -> they should be open on the other machine.
It should be a go from there.

To access your printer you may need to install it by typing smb://ipaddressofdad'scomputer/
selecting the printer and doing something from there (I forgot).

I have tried every combination of workgroup and server name and whatnot in both yast and print manager to no avail. I can go to smb://ipofcomputer and that comes up fine but nothing about a printer. Some folders in there ask me for login and pass but there is no login or pass. The computer has one account and it is set as the owner and does not even have a password set up. When I go onto that computer physically, the printer is shared under a certain name, that name which I have tried in all different forms and still no luck. Any other suggestions?
