i use rsync both at home and work to maintain a 7-day backup history. there are other setup possibilities but the way my setup works is that i end up with one directory that always has a complete copy of the latest version of the file structure and then 7 add'l directories, one for each day of the week, that contain backups of the files that were changed on that day. if this kind of setup interests you i'll be glad to post script samples and help you work through it.
There is great professional backup program AMANDA
Also there is cpio and tar programs for backing up. Read Backup howto from www.tldp.org

If you would post the scripts I would appreciate it. Thanks a lot for the help.
Thank you for the replies. I am checking out amanda, it sounds like a good solution provided I can back up to disk. The trick is to get it built. It doesn't want to build for me. Oh well, it is time to learn how to compile software, so I am up to the challenge.

Randy.
hey randy, it looks like there is a pre-built amanda package shipped with suse 9.2. is there a reason that one won't work for you? by all means, learn to build it if you want, :-) just trying to help save you some time maybe and get you going a little faster.
btw, you still interested in the rsync scripts or you going to put your time into amanda? just don't want to muddle things so if it sounds like amanda will meet yer needs that's great... this thread has prompted me to give it a look myself -- been using rsync so long and successfully that i haven't considered other options in quite some time.
