Multiple users with the same UID

Hi,

I've been using Suse for a couple of years now and everythign works fine.

Regardless of the time I'm using Linux (Suse mostly) I allmost allways used KDE and all the nice GUI interfaces and "wizards", not too much of the comand line interface.

When I try to use the User Management module in Yast I get the message that there is multiple users with the same UID an that i shuold correct that manualy in /etc/passwd.

When I look at the /etc/passwd there is a bunch of users: root, me, and other "system users".

I looked up on Google what's the form of a /etc/passwd entry

"Name:Password: UserID:PrincipleGroup:Gecos: HomeDirectory:Shell"

It seems that I have
- vdr-Video Disk Recorder
- messagebus-User for D-BUS

with the same UID that is 100.

Should I change one of them to a unique UID just like that, or is there something that I should pay attention to?

Thanks in advance!

Korto

On my Suse 10.1 system, the messagebus user has a UID of 100 and group of 101. So I guess you should change the UID of vdr to something that it not used by other users in /etc/passwd. The UID should probably be above 101 but not 1000 or above.

I changed the messagebus UID and it worked fine.

Thanks!

I wanted to change the vdr UID to something else than 100 but by mistake I changed the messagebus UID, and everything is fine. It does seem logical that it does not matter what the UID is as long as it's unique and in some proper range.
