i use slackware which install KDE in /opt which has the same directory structure are any other Linux system, look for /opt/kde/share/kde/applications and /opt/kde/share/applnk with several sub-directories, in other distros it will probly be similar only in /usr/share/>* etc...
i have extensively edited the files in there for KDE's menus, if you are knowledgeable about editing these types of text files that make the menu links you can make them point to any app and include custom icons too...
Gnome has a similar setup with the config text files in /usr/share/applications and they have corresponding icons in /usr/share/pixmaps
