Monitor recognition problems upon installing Suse 8.2

I'm totally new to linux and just installed Suse 8,2 onmy system. Everything works fine exccept for my crappy winmodem which I should replace, and the fact that Suse seems to have serious problems with my monitor.

My monitor, the KDS 7311 (exactly the same as Viewsonic VS7e) isnt listed in the available monitors list, and I can't get anything else to work. I've tried VESA specifications congruent with those of my monitor and fiddling with xf86config, but to no avail. I can only get a resolution of 640*480 and when i try anything else mymonitor doesn't seem to recieve any signal anymore. My video card is the S3 ProSavage...

DOes anyone know how to fix this problem?

nb... please explain in detail as i'm totally new to linux

thanks!
