Media plugins
 

Hi,
My question involves media plugins for streaming media. In my version of Suse 9.0 I have two media players, Kaffeine and Totem. I am using the latest version of firefox as my default browser. I notice that totem pops in as the default media player with my firefox browser. It has no problem with mpeg files. However, I would also like to be able to play quicktime and WMV files. I downloaded the essential codecs from the MPlayer site and installed them in the path user/lib/win32/essential-20040922. The essential-20040922 is the actual folder where the essential plugins are located. I was looking at the Mplayer site thinking about installing Mplayer, but that seemed a bit over my level of experience. I also found a program called KPlayer that is supposed to be a version of Mplayer but I have not tried that either. I was wondering with the two players I already have Totem and Kaffeine if there are any plugins that can further enhance those players without having to download some other player. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

mplayer compilation really is very very simple. it's just as easy as any other source install. no, seriously, it just looks scarier.

MPlayer IS worth the hassle becuase then you can use mplayerplug-ni to play videos embedded in webpages just like in windaz

Thanks for the response on Mplayer, I was able to find a site that had an actual rpm for my version of Suse 9.0. I had one conflict,
in that I had to get file liblzo.so1. Once I acquired that, the install went perfectly. The only question I have left is, how do I go about making Mplayer the default media player in my firefox browser. Again, thanks for the help.

http://mplayerplug-in.sf.net install that, symlink the library file to your FF plugins directory, and it'll sort itself out.

Get your hands on mplayer (RPM available here ) and then install the mplayerplug-in (get the RPM here ).

To setup firefox to use them follow these instructions.

Well, I am still struggling with M player. Actually, I have m player installed and it works great as a stand alone application. The issue I am having is with the plugin to work with firefox. I went to the PackMan links and established the link with yast. Then I went into yast and was able to get access to the mplayer plugin rpm. When I tried to install it thru yast I got a number of conflicts. There are several files that I need that I was wondering if I could acquire in possibly one rpm. The files are as follows:

XFree86-libs >= 4.3.99.902
glibc >= 2.3.3
libgcc >= 3.3.3
libstdc ++ >= 3.3.3

These are the file conflicts I get when I try to install the mplugin thru yast.
I can't help but think I am making this to hard. Any help as always will be greatly appreciated.
Just curious I have 191 megs of physical memory in my machine. Do you think that is enough? It seems kind of sluggish. Also is it possible or a good idea to upgrade to Suse 9.1 as opposed to staying at 9.0 and is that something free that can be accomplished through yast.?

again, it's so so much easier just to compile the source... you won't need any newer updates or anything i'm sure.

Thanks for the reminder, I just extracted the file again and ran ./configure. I got this response towards the end.
Checking for mozill-plugin... Package mozilla-plugin was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing 'mozilla-plugin.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable.
No package 'mozilla-plugin' found
configure: error: Unable to find gecko sdk

At that point the configure process ends. I am on uncertain ground here as far as my understanding. It appears I am missing the gecko sdk. I assume that is some other file that is missing in the mix.
Any help on how to proceed is appreciated.
