After the upgrade from 10.0 to 10.1 I lost the Creative Labs SB16 card. It worked previously. In Yast I get a dark space where the card should be listed, under I get two notes:
Configured as sound card number
Driver snd-sb16
When I try to add the Creative Labs SB-16 it fails, says there is an error with the module. At one point it was going to add it as the third card.
I deleted the sound files in /etc/modprobe.d and tried again but got the same results. I remember a few versions back I had to add modprobe in a boot.local file but could not find it this time - perhaps the system is trying to load it twice.
here is what I get at bootup:
<4>snd_sb16_csp: module not supported by Novell, setting U taint flag.
<4>snd_sb16_dsp: module not supported by Novell, setting U taint flag.
<4>snd_sb16: module not supported by Novell, setting U taint flag.
<3>ALSA sound/isa/sb/sb16.c:739: Sound Blaster 16 soundcard not found or device busy
<3>ALSA sound/isa/sb/sb16.c:743: In case, if you have AWE card, try snd-sbawe module
<4>snd_sb16: module not supported by Novell, setting U taint flag.
<3>ALSA sound/isa/sb/sb16.c:739: Sound Blaster 16 soundcard not found or device busy

running alsoconf as su got me system sounds and after than I was able to get Yast to find the Soundblaster 16 legacy card and I could run the test.
It appears that wav files play but none of the mp3 players work - I set up Amorak to use xine and it works well with wav files but claims it can not play mp3 files.
It's getting late, maybe tommorrow I can check into it more. I'll check back to see if anyone has anything helpful to offer.
I was in a similar situation and the bad news is: it fixed itself. I suspect something was whacked in the kernel; I did the recent on-line update that updated the kernel and after that the "Novell does not support" blather stopped. From there using alsaconf and alsamixergui worked very nicely, with no whining in /var/log/messages. Two problems remain, the alsamixer settings won't store (probably a permissions issue, if I can only guess what I need to change to fix that...) and my DVD/CD drive chokes and freezes the system with DMA enabled in any form or mode (bad, bad, bad for watching DVD's...).
I had a lot of trouble installing software with Yast, smart and just using rpm because of dependencies and conflicts - I am on dial-up so installing downloading software is really a pain in the butt, but once I followed the guide at the abopve site and used the new included "rug" everything was fixed and it is ok now. I suspect Novell wants you to register with them before getting all the updated files because after I registered everything fell into place an all was well again. I am not sure why, perhaps something with the government, perhaps they just want to know what systems are running Suse 10.1., but it definitely made a big difference once I used the "Online Update Configuartion" that registers with Novell.
I haven't check to see if I can run AVI files, but want to make sure that works as well. It all wasn't bad - just wished I had known ahead of time so I would not have wasted so much time experimenting.
