kernel panic when added new hard drive
Hi im having problems to use grub for a dual windows and linux system
what i did is to make a clean install of suse10.2 on my first hard drive (at this stage it was the only hard drive on my system) Then i needed to install windows and just to be sure that windows setup wont write anything on the linux drive mbr i just plugged out my linux drive and i installed windows xp They only way i can boot my windows now is to press F8 on boot to get the boot menu from bios and select windows hard disk to boot.. no problem there.. i think somehow linux drive is the default to boot. But when i have the windows drive plugged in and i want to boot linux i get a kernel panic message i could copy the message (i will do if is necessary). I can only boot linux if i take the windows drive off the system. So what i want to do is to just to make grub boot normal linux with the windows drive on the system and also add windows to grub. To be honest i didnt searched a lot to the forums to find the solution on my own because i couldnt copy the kernel panic message. (I HATE PEN AND PAPER ) :) |
Check your drive jumpers. Don't assume that you know what they should be. Read the label on each disk for running alone and running as either master or slave. I had some trouble with some Maxtor hard drives because I set the jumper to Master when the drive was running alone. That turned out to be a mistake on that particular model. The drive only worked properly when I set the jumper to 'cable select'. So read the label on each disk to see what the jumper settings should be.
