KDE won't start on OpenSUSE 10.3

Hi,

I have just installed OpenSUSE 10.3 on a computer in order to be used as a file sharing server (samba), the software is working fine, but I forgot to install KDE at the installation, so I installed it afterwards, but I can't make it to run, when I try to run startx, I get a fatal error: NO SCREENS FOUND, I get the same when I try to run kdestart.

How can I make it work, it is really important because I want to use one of KDE's utilities to backup the files on the server.

Thanks

Iveen

just do a reinstall, its much easier than trying to get kde to work afterwards.

one more thing, how did you forget to install kde? doesnt the install make you choose a desktop environment before you continue?

good luck,

Reinstall not possible

I have a lot of files already on that server, plus, there are a lot of settings (samba shares) and if i do a reinstall everything will go down the drain.

Is it possible for you to backup these files to either another machine or an external drive? If you are unable to use KDE, there should be other window managers, such as GNOME or xfce, that you could use in order to back up your files before doing a reinstall. Also, if you don't have this done already, you should consider creating separate partitions for your program and installation files so that in the event you upgrade or have to reinstall again at some point, your files on your samba shares will remain on your hard drive, residing on separate partitions.

The "no screens found" error message is usually related to your X server settings. Try running "sax2" to configure your graphics settings and then start KDE after that.
