Issues regarding GNOME and Mate desktops

Sir recently I have bought Toshiba satellite laptop and I have installed opensuse 13.1 on it. Everything is working fine and I am happy with its performance except the following.

In gnome desktop I have added some applications to the favourite menu and the favourite menu is not displaying properly I mean when I launch the desktop the favourite menu is going left bottom of the screen. The second issue is I am unable to switch between applications properly I mean the screen flickers continuously.

When I launch the mate desktop an unknown application is replicating itself and launching those apps indefinitely.

I have installed the same OS on another system ie., desktop and found none of the above.

kindly analyze the issue and suggest the solution.

Regards,
Rupesh.

you haven't given very solid information to analyze, and certainly suggesting a solution is not yet possible at the moment.

the first part sounds like problems with graphic cards/drivers/modules, the part with application replicating itself - well, without knowing which application replicates itself...?

My graphics card details are
AMD Radeon™ R5 M230. memory amount : 1GB dedicated VRAM. memory type : DDR3 Video RAM

I have installed amd-catalyst-14-4-rev2-Linux.zip which contains fglrx-14.10.1006.1001.

When I start the mate desktop I am getting message as "starting caja" continuously.

sounds like 2 seperate problems.

try to revert to the fallback graphic driver (i.e. uninstall catalyst) to see if that helps.
if it helps, you know that it's a problem with graphic drivers.

As you have been told NUMEROUS TIMES before, there are not JUST SIRS on this site...starting every post with "sir.." is pointless.

And is this the same 13.1 machine that had the broken installation? The one you posted about before, and didn't want to re-install, because it was 'tedious'???
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...st-4175490317/

Since the error doesn't show itself on the machine with the fresh installation, then either it's the user configuration on the first machine, or something continues to be broken. Can you log in as a different user, and does the problem show itself then?

TB0ne, i can understand your getting upset, but i think it's more of a cultural problem - in many countries it's still common to be much more polite in written word, even on the internet.

but (and here i chime in to your critique), it also implies that we are teachers, and it is our task to answer all questions, no matter how uninformed they are.
which basically means, op does not take responsibility.
in some places they have a very strongly hierarchical teaching culture.
and i totally resent that.

so, rupeshforu3, we are just fools like you. don't expect us to show you the path to enlightenment.

Polite? Certainly. Appropriate? Certainly not.

The OP has two user ID's, rupeshforu3 and rupeshforu. They've been informed MULTIPLE TIMES, by SEVERAL people not to do this. At this point, the failure is not the teacher, but the student. Information has been given, and ignored.

Quite true...everyone has things they need to know. But ignoring what you ARE told (repeatedly) isn't a good thing.

actually i forgot to mention that i have noticed several people across forums using "sir" and even more polite forms, paired with that "humble" attitude that is bordering on stubborn ignorance.
the mentality reminds me of certain yoga teaching books i read... the teaching hierarchy. it's kinda funny to see it translated into linux...

so my remark wasn't so much about this particular doubleposter.

I have already specified that I am not using rupeshforu account. Up to now my policy was give respect and take respect but If you think respecting others is my fault I will never post a thread starting with sir.

Then see the LQ Rules about having multiple accounts...why did you set another one up, then??

What you're not understanding, despite being told, is that "sir" is for MEN...by doing that, you are ACTIVELY disrespecting every WOMAN who posts here.

Get back to your original question, and see post #5, and answer the questions asked. Again:
  • Is this the same 13.1 machine that had the broken installation? The one you posted about before, and didn't want to re-install, because it was 'tedious'???
  • Can you log in as a different user, and does the problem show itself then?

this is a very important point in an online community (and in life in general).
i didn't even think about that in this case - i guess my brain took it for granted that this sort of hierarchy i was talking about is also patriarchical. which is not my way.
and i firmly believe the world is ready for equality.

yep, never say "he" when really you don't know.
and on these forums, you can't ever really know.

but,
back to computer & admin business!

First I have created rupeshforu account and once I was unable to login using this account so I have created another account rupeshforu3 and using it regularly. Can any one of you delete the rupeshforu account.

I have one bad habit I won't follow what others do and respecting other's from this time I will definitely change my attitude.

As you've been told several times in the past, NO, we cannot delete an account...contact a moderator if you need help, email Jeremy, etc. They can also change the password on your other account, which is why you didn't need to create a second, as you were told then.

Great..it only took being asked MANY times. Now, can you go back to your technical question, and address what you've been asked about your desktop?

Sometimes the favourite menu works properly and at some times not. In root user account it is not at all working and in local account its working fine sometimes.

In mate desktop I followed the suggested by other people and succeeded
edit the file /usr/share/applications/caja.desktop and change the "Exec=" line to:
Exec=caja --sync

...which points back to having problems with your setup/users. Since you won't re-install to correct the bad installation, and you don't want to respond to the questions we've asked in this thread about removing/recreating users, what do you think we'll be able to tell you?
