what happens if you type 'mozilla' or 'firefox' in the terminal?
you could try rpmfind.net for a new flavor of firefox and try to install it, and see if it puts it back in the menu.

I think the applet from gnome or the kde has gone off the kde start menu.. i mean the location in start menu where you try to access the internet based apps

That is exactly right, all the other headings like Games, Multimedia, etc are there, but the "Internet" heading is gone.

Can anyone help?

if you can, mount the cd media
Chek for all rpms named applet (i am suggesting this as i am not aware of exact name of the rpm or package)
try installing all in combination of "internet+gnome/kde+applet"

looks silly but solutions is same as problem
