Hi all!

I have just installed my SUSE 9.1. I am new to linux and want to continue here. The only problem I am facing till now is about installing Graphics driver (I have heard that it is a little tricky ).

My mailboard is A7V8X-MX SE, which has graphics driver: VIA/S3G UniChrome Driver. I have download the driver for linux from internet.

The problem is that the given README file is outdated, i.e., it specifies something which I should write in configureation files, is already there (almost). And still it SAX says that 3D acceleration is not supported, though in README it is written that linux will not detect 3D acceleration and I will have to do some <bla bla bla> there.

Still I tried to do what it said, but instead of correcting anything, everything got spoiled, I mean, even the screensavers stoped working. So I have lost all my faith to experiment with system without full knowledge.

All in all, I am unable to install the driver. If any body has installed this driver, please let me know....

There are two options for Unichrome. Either you follow VIA's route, or your follow Unichrome's (open source) route. Despite the open source community's best efforts to support VIA and get known using viaarena, VIA keeps denying its existence...

So in short, VIA only supports old distributions, on which you'll only be able to use VIA's own modified version of xine, called VeXP (still open source, though).

But if you use http://unichrome.sf.net you'll have hardware mpeg decoding with Xine, MPlayer, and MythTV, on any linux distribution.

On the other hand, the open-source is deep in very active development, and so it is quite harder to setup.
