Installing updated versions of software already installed

This particular query is brought about my wantying to upgrade my Cedega using the latest RPM. Is it dependant on the author of the software whether the older software is uninstalled? Will previous settings be lost or is that also author dependant?

Bugger, it just occurred to me that under the Versions tab in YaST I can select the newer version and update. Sorry.
