Installing opensuse 10.3 on second drive
 

I have ubuntu linux installed on my second hard drive /dev/sdb. When I boot up the opensuse 10.3 dvd from my external dvd drive and reach the partition manager part of the installation, /dev/sdb does not appear in the list of drives. It used to appear in previous versions. How do I get it to appear?

When suse came with the install options choice the expert option
and go to manual normally it shows all the drives you have

But this just out of memory it is rather a long time ago that I install suse 10.3 but I am sure that some where she gives the option to choice the
drives where to install but default option in suse to write GRUB is sda
so you maybe you have to change this to

Yes I know the expert options that you're talking about. It still doesn't show me the drive there. It's like its completely missing.

You,re second hard drive is a internal or external Hd ?
Because I just check it I run the installer until the expert mode
and it shows all my 3 internal drives
But as you notice there are a few options.
So why not with you,re I have install CD from Suse 64 bits version

They are internal drives. Maybe they're misconfigured in the BIOS, DMA settings maybe or somesuch? I did switch my motherboard afterall.

When you,re in the Bios setup it must also show 2 drives.
If were IDE drives it should shows 1 as a master the other as a slave
If it were sata drives it only shows 2 drives and you can decide the boot sequence of the HD

It shows two hard drives and a cd rom drive. The two harddrives are master and slave on primary ide. The cdrom drive is master on second ide.

It seems to me that you,re system is ok
So the only think I can up with at this moment is that DVD you have is missing some thing
If it is possible I always down load the CD version ,because the time needed to download it is shorter ,so the change that some is going wrong
is less.But if you buy the DVD version it should be ok

Is it possible that I can't install SUSE on a slave drive?

Yes you can if I remember it well it was discussed on this forum too
The only think is where to put GRUB because if the is not boot able then you to put grub ON BOOT ABLE drive or A floppy perhaps
I my self has 3 sata drives and no floppy
I try to install suse 9.3 just for fun on a other drive which was at that moment a boot able devices installing GRUB it was rather persistent to put GRUB on sda while it was oke to install suse 9.3 on sdb that was some think I do not like and it give me some problems to change into GRUB on sdb
While other distros make no problem of it in this case mind Fedora and Mandriva 2008

So I guess its not that problem then, since Ubuntu can install just fine on my second drive. In suse 10.3, even if I install grub on my first drive, which is bootable, I have no option of putting Suse itself on the second drive.

You misunderstand me you can put suse on every hd you like the only problem ,if there is one is where to put GRUB
I mention it because for me a dual boot that is it I do not like triple boot but that is just my opinion
But again you can put suse on every hd you like
But I am still do not understand why suse do not show you the second drive.
This very strange .But I kind see from my place.
But if you,re suse cd or DVD do not show you the second drive then there no other option
than not installing suse or trying a other cd or dvd

What kind of cd do you use Install or live ?

I use the installation DVD.

After a lot of things suse came up with a installation proposal Nearly on top is a section called partitioning
Click on this item and you get a few options one of the options is create custom partition setup
When you click on this option suse shows all you,re hds
