I used YAST to install my kernel source and I was expecting to see it in /usr/src or /usr/src/linux but it's not there. I know how to install it manually, but I am new to SuSE and I would like to try different things that SuSE can do. Does YAST install the kernel source somewhere else, or am I doing something wrong. I am using SuSE 9.1 and migrated from RH9. RH used to keep kernel and kernel source in /usr/src but under SuSE I see only the kernel. BTW I didn't even have the kernel there at first, I did YAST update and now it shows up there. Or is this what I am seeing the source, because I thought that it has to have src, or source in it's name and also have a kernel itself in the directory. I guess I am confused

OK I tried to install manually. It was installing, but than I went to /usr/src and it doesn't show up there either. I am trying to setup ndiswrapper and I cannot do it without the kernel source. Where is the problem?

To unravel your and my confusion:

the kernel binary is found at /boot

the kernel source can be found at /usr/src/linux (even in suse),

to check if it is installed, type 'rpm -q kernel-source' on command line.

To install the source, open Yast, click 'Install and Remove Software'

select Filter: 'Search'

type 'kernel-source' and check the only entry that appears.

Now you have the sources installed. If you've updated the kernel with an online update previously, you need to run it again, since you'll need matching versions of source and binary.

If you have SuSE 9.1 Personal Edition, the kernel source is not on your CD! You need to download it from the FTP server or add the server to your installation sources in Yast ('Change Source of Installation').
