Go to to YaST2 and add the below software repository

Type: HTTP / Servername: download.videolan.org /
Directory: /pub/videolan/vlc/SuSE/10.2

after it finishes with the adding of the repo
goto to software management and type VLC

click it to install, accept it's dependencies and you're done

Cheers,

Vangelis

my mistake on the steps it was a typo

after checking on to create a new repo

you choose among the types HTTP

At the field servername, add exactly:
download.videolan.org/

and at the field directory, add exactly:
pub/videolan/vlc/SuSE/10.2

there shouldn't be the starting / at the field directory

do the above and check back

If you can browse this page from Suse then it's not a connectivity issue.

It should normally work with the above. Then check at the videolan site to download the source and install it by hand (look at the bottom of the vlc page).

Are you sure you didn't miss anything on the repository settings? do a double check and if nothing works then go for the source.

Don't worry you aren't being a pest!

Cheers,

Vangelis

i don't get why so many people are suggesting using yast? Have you lot actually tried installing vlc with yast? Because it doesn't work if you are using opensuse.

The best way to install it, is to use smart. Follow what it says in the following link:-

http://susewiki.org/index.php?title=Smart

Once you have smart installed as described go to a terminal and simple type:-

smart install vlc

Hit (Y) when prompted and your done.

Why does everyone recommend Smart? Yast works perfectly fine in openSUSE 10.2. By the way, the packman version of vlc works a lot better, it has support for theora and matroska, unlike the version from the videolan repos. Add the packman repo listed here: http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_Ya...tories#Packman and install from there. If you're not using the retail version of SUSE, then you have to add the oss repo for Suse 10.2 listed here: http://en.opensuse.org/Package_Repositories cause there's some missing packages not available on the openSUSE 10.2 CD's. Good luck.

a little flame here

See Jon Briggs the nice thing is that you have a choice here and you gave imti that one, that's the thing I love on open source, you check, you test and last..you use what suits best for you!

Anyway, I hope imti gets back to us with a positive feedback with either way of getting VLC to run

PS. Although I'm wondering why people isn't using what's already there...mplayer & xine... but that's choice, right?

yes yast can be good for certain things but for vlc it doesn't work i tried every walkthrough and every respository people suggest and nothing worked. Smart works perfect you just install and set the pacman repositories as suggested on the wiki and it installs fine.

As for mplayer it doesnt play anything like as many codecs as vlc. vlc will even play single packed rars or unmounted .iso's.

The reason why Smart works is because, by default, it includes the full oss repository as a channel. If you add this same repository (along with the Packman repos) Yast also can install VLC for you. That's how I did it.
