Installation fault on Suse enterprise server: An error has occurred during installati

Hello Group,

As a new (Suse) Linux user, I try to install Suse Linux Enterprise Server 9 on a PC. However, during installation at the end of loading kernel in memory' I get the message:

An error occurred during the installation.

When cancelling the 'Should the root image be loaded into the RAM disk' option in 'Settings, Debug (expert)' I advance somewhat but then later in the installation process the program says it cannot install 1 of the first packages it wants to install.

What could be happening? I am installing on a P4 3.2 GHz box. There is a partitioning with old software present on the disk, that is changed to be overwritten by the Suse installation.

Thanks, Listman.

3 days later: Now the problem has been worked around using a networked share to mount the cd's. For all those who experience the same, here is the procedure:

- Copy the entire installation CD to one Unix server reachable in the network and share the directory with nfs. The same procedure will most probably work for ftp, smb and others.
- Start the installation procedure with CD 1 of Suse enterprise server 9 by booting the system from this CD. Press F3 to select the source medium. Choose NFS. Fill out the server address and the directory shared.
- Use 'install'. The program is loaded from CD and continues intstallation from the network, from the copy of the same CD. Apparently the installation program is configuring the network card in your system.
- In case of problems you now get in the 'Main menu'. Go to 'Start Installation or System' and then 'Start Installation or Update'. Then you get in the 'Choose the source medium menu'. Here you choose 'Network'. In my case I used NFS as the protocol. Say 'Yes' to automatically configure DHCP and fillout the server address and the shared directory. Now it installs the program in memory with the message 'Loading Data into RAM Disk' and the installation program starts.
- When being asked for the second cd, remember to have it copied and shared to the same share as before. You may have to unshare and share the device or directory you copied to.

Probably some engineer has overseen an installation problem that arised in our config, although it is not so special: A P4 3.2 Ghz with EM64T and 512MB RAM, a Realtek 8169 Network card, 74GB disk and a Via OHCI usb controller. The problem that arised was:

- When loading the installation program from CD with all default options, an error occurs.
- When loading the installation program from CD without loading the root image into the ram disk starts the installation program but prevents you from dismounting CD1 and putting CD2. Chickens and eggs.

Hope it helps someone, as I have seen the same question sometimes on the web.
