Unhappy Install stops before it loads

I am trying to install SuSE Pro 9.1 on my laptop, and it has worked entirely before. But now it seems to stop at the screen where "welcome" is in many different languages. The computer just doesn't respond there. It is the same with Novell Linux Desktop and SuSE 9, which have also worked before. I am curious as to why this is happening, and how to stop it. Thanks for the help.

First, you will probably need to tell everyone the make and model of your laptop. Secondly, how old is it, is the bios up to date, etc. For example, on an older machine, acpi may be causing the problem and you might need to disable in the kernel at boot. Without any additional comments available, my first suggestion would be for you to go ahead and try a MANUAL vs. automatic install.

FYI, I have an older, around 2000 HP AMD K-2 laptop. Unly Ubuntu would install with the fully automatic install. However, I had great success with installing Fedora 2 manually (used it for a long while) and SUSE Pro 9.2 had zero problems with a manual install. It just ran a bit slowly.

The laptop is an HP ze4420us, it is about a year old. ACPI isn't causing the problem, like I said, it worked fine before. Since then, nothing has changed at all. The bios has had no need to be changed. I cannot get to the install at all. It does not proceed past the welcome screen.

Not sure exactly what you have done!

I would imagine that your master boot record is feeling sickly.

Recommend that you try another distribution (Simply MEPIS, or PCLinuxOS are great examples). These distributions are great for diagnostics as they can function as both Live CDs and traditional hard disk installs.

At least then you can see if the laptop will boot.

You could then see if they will install to your hard drive. Make sure you select the option to keep the data on your home partition!

Windows installs fine, Fedora installs fine. Heck, they both boot fine too. If that was the problem, these would not work, would they?

You don't mention anywhere in here what devices are hooked up. Do you have any USB devices plugged in during install?
USB devices frequently hang up installs of SuSE.

I have an HP 4125-same thing happened to me under both 9.1 and 9.2

Under 9.1-hit the left ctrl key and hold right after flash screen for entering BIOS
if you time it right-goes into text screen, skipping graphic, install normal.

Under 9.2-reset BIOS settings so video memory is only 16mb-install normaly. Not sure if this works for 9.1 also.

ithawtewrong: Yeah, I unplugged all USB devices to make sure, same issue.

nekogami: That is interesting, I did lower the RAM allocated for video memory in the BIOS from 64 MB down to 32 recently. I will try your suggestion and post my results.
