Install linux and win xp in two different drives

hello: I have win xp on my c drive and I have another empty internal hard drive, in which I am trying to install suse linux. When I try to install on my second drive, the installation program fails to install all modules. The solution I found was to disconnect the windows drive, and suse linux installs perfectly. My problem now is that I don't know how boot into linux when both drives are connected. Do I have to reinstall grub, if so how, or is there another way where I can choose windows or linux??

Thanks

Jonathan

welcome to LQ!

yes, you'd need to re-configure your bootloader, providing it with the details of your current disk/partition setup, so as that it will give you the appropriate options at boot time... in other words, the bootloader will let you choose whether you want to boot windows or linux everytime you start the computer...

That's weird, I just did that. Please provide more details, like which disk is attached to which IDE channel.

Have you checked that you don't have both disks attached to the same IDE cable with both as masters or both as slaves?

Also, check in BIOS that all IDE channels are set to AUTO.

dual boot

Above info is correct. Check jumpers on HD's and auto set in BIOS

BTW, I have dual booted Wxp with Mandrake (now mandriva) 10.0 on to 1 hd or 2 separate hd's many times, with Lilo taking care of everything flawlessly.

Good luck

Thanks for your replies, I have two sata HD. From what I know these HD do not have jumpers, so they shoud autodetect if they are master or slave. They are connected with separate cables to the motherboard. I find it very strange that I cannot install to the second drive. Any Ideas why this is happening. This is my first Linux installation, so maybe there is something that I am not doing right.

Thank again

Jonathan
