You should install 10.3 now and then upgrade later.
I wish to use Suse now; Should I install 10.3 and then upgrade, or wait for 11.0?
The distro I'm using now is starting to fall apart, and I would like to switch distros as soon as I possibly can.
I really like what I've read about Suse. It seems to have improved greatly since version 9.3, the last version I used, and it comes with just about everything I need.
But should I just wait a month for version 11.0 to be released, or should I install 10.3 today and upgrade later?
I would install 10.3 now. It's very stable and 11.0 is still in development. Especially if you're going to install it on a machine you depend on everyday.
I be running 11.0 rc1 and I have no issues except I need kinternet running for web access. You can dl and install 11.0 rc1 in a separate partition and if it all works then move to it and you'll still have your old distro still available.
Else I'd wait the 17 days for 11.0 to be released instead of doing the 2 releases in such a short span.
So actually your question is how good the upgrade from 10.3 to 11.0 will go?
I have never tried it but I think if you upgrade your distro like that, it's always a smart move to go with a clean install. But that's just my opinion, don't know if it's 100% correct.
I think 10.3 is a very good version. It is beats 10.2 by far in speed and ease of use. I'm waiting for 11, but not for 11.0; has to have a higher (read: more reliable) number.
So, my advise would be to start using 10.3
I'm running 11 beta right now and it's plenty stable for me. I use it as my primary machine at school. There's a lot of updates constantly though like 2-3 Gb per week.
You should install 10.3 if you want to use kde. I saw 11.0 with kde4 and it looks like an interface made for stupid children. I've been using 10.3 since the day of it's release, i like it, but it's not really good. Mozilla and Konqueror crash once in a while.
Wait and install 11. Developers have been working a year, so dont ignore it. Do you think the version become stable, when it is announced stable or when it is actually stable? The 11 rc1 is stable enough. In my opinion a fresh install is always better then update/upgrade...
UPDATE: I just installed openSuse 11.0 (KDE) on both of my computers and it works wonderfully. The ATI drivers on my work computer didn't install correctly, and I ran into some issues while trying to install Tovid, but overall - it works well. The package manager is MUCH faster now, and everything seems stable.
Why wait it's available now, and save the hassles of the upgrade which went almost smoothly with the exception of mis-identifying my drives but then openSuse always seems to do that with my systems.
Also the new KDE 4.1 along with compiz works so cool (vistaites look out.
I have it installed on two of my systems a desktop alone with an intel motherboard with drives galore using xp in a virtual machine and an older dell c640 dual booting with xp sp3 (can't vista that one) and except for this moment spends most of the time out of xp (had to fire up for maintenance).
Firefox 3 is even there for all to use, this is one issue I have with opensuse in that the installation scripts alway exit with an error due to the old firefox directory not being there and it can't find it, but still installs okay.
Both systems were updated from 10.3 but a clean install should work even smoother for you.
