Hi,
This should be simple but for me it's not..In past versions the thumbdrive would mount as soon as it was plugged in and you could umount it by right clicking your mouse and select umount..
This version mounts as soon as my USB Kingston drive is plugged in, but when you click "safely remove device" it says it's not listed in /etcfstab and you are not root..

My question is who does this in 10.0 hal? udev? or what else..
How do I safely remove the device without rebooting?
Note I could find nothing in the admin manual for suse 10.0 or on line..

I have the same problem and have not really found any solution although I have read a few proposed workarounds. You just have to make sure the drive is not being used when you remove it. If it is removed while writing, you could corrupt your data. Otherwise, it is supposed to be safe to remove without being unmounted. In my case, I just shut down all applications so I am sure nothing is using it, wait a few seconds, and then pull it out.

In 10.0, USB drives are mounted with the option 'sync', which results in immediate writing. This means it is safe to remove the drive if no activity is observed.

Thank you for the information..Thats scary!! I do see the hard drive lite momentarily lite when the thumb drive is pulled from the connector..I wish there was a more secure way..

Hi,
I think I will be on the safe side with this issue..
I did a "fdisk -l" as root, and found my thumb drive is listed as "/dev/sda1"
So for the time being I will play it safe and issue a"umount /dev.sda1"again as root..
Just pulling it out scares me..(big chicken hehe)

OBTW a surprise was to find the file sys was fat16 on my drives

Here's something you don't need to be root for:

eject /media/usbdisk

(or whatever the mountpoint is)
