How to kill a process or application

Hi, i have encounter a problem once when i close the firefox and click on the icon to start again, it says the firefox did not close properly and ask me to kill the process.

This how i start
ps -ef

Then this is the result:
UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD
1000 17264 17259 1 Feb16 ? 00:01:50 /usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin

17264 is the PID and 17259 is the PPID. How do i kill the firefox? is it kill 17264? I type and it responds an error?

How do i go to kill the process?

Please guide..

  1. Be root (or use sudo in front of the commands given.
  2. Do:
    Code:
    # ps axu | grep firefox
in order to find the process (it will have a different PID every time it happens; for other applications, replace "firefox".
  3. Do:
    Code:
    # kill 17264
    or (if it doesn't work):
    Code:
    # kill -9 17264
(replace "17264" with the actual PID).

That should do it (btw. "ps axu" does more or less the same as "ps -ef" - use whatever you like better).

M.
