The printer in question I want to add is the last in the list above: hpphotos.
YaST/ Hardware/Printer/Add a new Queue don't allow me to add a samba printer, just local printers ?!/!?
Try again with YaST. Click 'Add' and when asked for configuring a new queue, say 'No'. You should then get a selection of protocols to connect through of which one is SMB. If you select this one, you will be asked for the connection details.

Ouch ! How easy it is ! I never imagine that saying No I could continue with the process, rather than finishing it. Designing a (good) GUI is not a trivial task....
